Constans II was the eldest son of the Roman usurper Constantine III and was appointed co-emperor by him from 409 to 411. Constans II was sent to Spain by his father accompanied by his family and the general Gerontius. Constans had to return to report to his father at Arles on the progress of the Barbarians. He left his family in the care of Gerontius. Gerontius rebelled, making alliances with the barbarian tribes. Gerontius advanced on Constans and his father with the support of his barbarian allies. In the year 411, the joint forces of Constans II and Constantine's troops faced the rebel, Gerontius, and were defeated at Vienne, where Constans was captured and executed.
