Emperor Leo I, emperor of the Eastern Empire, had declared the previous emperor of the Western Empire, Majorian, a usurper. In 459 Ricimer, a great miltary leader, was made consul. Leo I, who was based in Constantinople, tried to control Italian affairs through Ricimer. Ricimer forced Majorian to resign and then ordered his execution on August 7, 461 in Rome. Shortly after Libius Severus was selected by Leo I and Ricimer as the next emperor in Rome on 19 November 461. Libius Severus died on 25 September 465 in Rome. The cause of death is unknown. There were rumours that he had died from natural causes but this could have been a cover story for his assassination by means of poison orchestrated by Ricimer. Libius Severus was succeeded by Anthemius.
