Gaul had been separated from the western Roman Empire by the usurper Constantine III. Jovinus was a Usurper who started his rise to the throne as a general of the Roman Emperor Honorius. Jovinus assumed the imperial title in AD 411. He named his brother Sebastianus as co-emperor in 412. At first he was successful gaining control over much of Gaul but was attacked by both Franks and Visigoths. Jovinus was defeated at the siege of Valence. The Visigoths captured the usurper Jovinus, and handed him over to Postumus Dardanus, the Roman Governor reporting to Honorius in Gaul, for execution. King Ataulf of the Visigoths also captured Sebastianus in 413 and as with his brother also turned him over to Postumus Dardanus who executed Sebastianus and sent his head to the court of Honorius court at Ravenna.
