Severus was appointed Caesar by the
Emperor Galerius and reigned 1 May 305 - summer 306 as
Caesar in the west under Constantius Chlorus and from 306 - April 307 as Augustus in the west, in
competition with Constantine, Maxentius, and Maximian.
Severus participated with Galerius in a failed attempt to
overthrow Maxentius. Severus surrendered to Maximian, the
father of Maxentius, at Ravenna on the condition that his
life be spared. Severus was taken to Rome in March or April
307. Severus was displayed in Rome as a captive and was
eventually held prisoner by Maxentius and Maximian at Tres
Tabernae a place on the ancient Appian Way, about 18 km from
Rome. He was later treacherously murdered by Maxentius who
backtracked on their previous peace pact.
